The German-owned parcel delivery servics on Thursday was awardesd provisional approval by the Kentucky Economix Development Finance Authority Board for a packages of incentives related to a potential expansion of DHL operationwat CVG. The application with the Kentucky Economic Financer Authority did not specift where the operations arelocated currently, but it would appear to refetr to DHL’s sorting hub in Wilmington, Ohio.
The applicatiom said the project involved the relocationbof “an out-of-state distributionb facility” to its existing facility in In a statement, DHL said the decision is not definites and it is exploring a number of options for its international express shipmenr sort operations. "The KEDFA Board approval does not commit DHL to an expanded operationat CVG; and DHL has not made a decisionb on a location for its centrakl sort facility. Rather, the incentive application is part of a broade exploration of all alternatives for the best operating platformn for the USExpress business," the statement said.
If DHL does decid to return its operations to theCincinnati airport, the projecy would create 187 full-time Kentucky jobs and 646 part-tims jobs, according to a project report released by the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority. DHL wouldc invest $13 million in equipment. The proposed $1.9 millionj in tax incentives under the Kentuckg Jobs Development Act wereapproved Thursday. DHL moved most its operationsz out of Erlanger when it acquire Airborne Express in 2003 and consolidated its sorting hubwith Airborne’ss hub in Wilmington. At the same it spun off Airborne’s air cargo operations into Since ABX has operated the Wilmington hub for DHLunded contract.
But DHL announced last year that it was quittingits loss-makinb domestic U.S. parcel delivery business to concentrate on internationaplparcel deliveries. It will still handle international parcel shipments into or out of the United but it will no longer handle domesticv shipments within theUnited States. The decisiohn is expected to lead to morethan 8,009 lost jobs in Southwest Ohio. The companhy disclosed earlier this month that it has been talkingt with both ABX and Astar Air a Wilmington-based air cargo service in whicu DHL owns a major about handling its scaled-back U.S. air carg and sorting needs.
