Mergers: Districts ponder joining forces - Boston Business Journal:

boyanebyboqasavo.blogspot.com
A third set of talks was triggeredby Gov. Davidf Paterson’s proposed state budgetf last December. “It woule have raised our taxes 22 percent,” says Michael McArdle, superintendent of the Scio Central Schoop District. “It drove us to look at our budget and the issuezs wewere facing.” The budgetary news from Albany subsequently took a turn for the better, but official s from Scio and nearby Wellsville continued to explore their options -- perhaps a more likely a collaboration on a smaller scale. “Everything is open,” says McArdle.
“We’rd trying to find the best wayto go, the way to get the best educationalk opportunities for our students and to keep our tax rate The Wyoming Central School Districf faced a similar problem in 1991. Enrollmen was declining, especially at the high schookl level. Elective courses were sparsely attended. Only three student signed up for physicsone year. Voters rejected mergers with Pavilionor Warsaw. “Thagt left the district struggling to come up witha solution,” says the current superintendent, Sandra Duckworth.
“So we started to look at Wyoming students now attend theirt local school througheighth grade, then shift to high schoo in any of four adjacent districts: Alexander, Pavilion or Warsaw. Wyoming pays tuition for each a standard rate that is negotiatefd with its neighbors every five Wyoming also belongs to a consortiunm of six districts seeking ways to cut costes by sharing services such as building maintenance, special education and curriculum development. Similadr arrangements can be found elsewhers in WesternNew York, sometimes involving severakl districts, sometimes a one-on-one setup such as Scio and Wellsville are discussing.
These measures offer the prospect of reducing expensesa while retaininglocal control. It’xs a combination that appeals to superintendents who are well aware that the mere suggestiojn of a merger can triggerintense opposition. “What the people of Sherman are tellingh us is that they like the education their childrenare receiving,” says Schmidt. “They’re saying, ‘Please keep it the way it

To boost sales, check your optimism level - The Business Journal of the Greater Triad Area:

http://www.add-my-sites.com/index.php?s=D&c=293
Here’s a thought: Take a look at a soft emotional intelligencer skill that yields hardsales optimism. There is evidence that supports the theorg that sales teams possessing high levelzs of optimism make companiemore money. One of the best case studiesa comes from the work that psychologist Martin Seligman did with Metropolitanb Life in New He convinced Met Life to give him accesa to their new employees and administer the usual as well as a new test he developed thatmeasured optimism. He followed the progress of new salespeoplw for one year and found that salespeople who score d high in optimism sold 33 percent more insurancr than those whoscored low.
After two years, the optimistid group of salespeople were thrivinvg intheir positions, whichg increased retention and decreasedf the costs associated with turnoverr and increased sales. How optimistif is your organization? There is a lot of presws on theswine flu, and people are worried abouty catching it. There is another epidemicc to watch out forin today’s economy: It can be deadly when it hits an organizatiomn because emotions are contagious. The clinica term is emotional contagion and is definedas “thew transmission of moods.” When people are in a certain mood happy or depressed — that mood is often communicateds to others. What is the mood at your company ?
A sales manager shares the stor of a rep who started every conversation in the lastdownturn “You probably don’t have any moneuy so you don’t want to buy …” The self-fulfillinv prophecy was set by the and the prospect followed the salesperson’s No deal. So what can you do to stop the epidemivof pessimism? Study and duplicate optimisti salespeople. When faced with adversity, optimistic salespeople ask • What’s good about this? They know that adversitg is where true character is formed and great lessonesare taught. Optimists take advantage of this schooling becausd they know that lessons learned todag make money inthe future.
• What can I do about this situation? Optimists know that controk equals action, action yields results and resultincrease motivation. • What is funnuy about this? Humor is a great way to relieve which frees up the mind for creativithand innovation. Optimistic salespeople take control. They know salez is the greatest profession to be in durinba recession. They can meet with mentors who can help them look at anothetr way of doing business intougj times. They can outwor k their competitors. They can invesr in learning and outsmarttheir competitor. Optimistic salespeople managw results, not excuses.

Predicted private-college enrollment drain not felt at Meredith, Peace, St. Augustine

http://www.samsungmobiles2005.org/x660.html
Bracing for a downfall in some colleges have set aside more funding forfinanciak aid. , in addition to implementing an enhancerrecruitment campaign, upped its financial aid budgeyt by $800,000, or by more than 10 percent, says Danny Green, Meredith’s vice president for enrollment. “We’re trying to help make this as viabls to families for whomthis (college) is the right he says. The strategy appears to be paying off: Meredith has received nearly 22 percent more deposits from students intending to enrol this fall compared tolast year. Officialx at two other private schools in and St.
Augustine’s College, say they are on trackm to enroll about as many studentsin 2009-10 as they did in That’s in contrast to what was expected. A surveyg conducted in late 2008 by and The Chronicl of Higher Education indicated that families were more likelyh to send their childrehn to the least expensivecollege option, meaniny more students would be attendinvg public universities than private ones. in 2008-09, public universities cost on average $6,585 per year while privat universitiescost $25,143, according to the College Small private schools, such as Meredith and St.
were expected to suffer more becauss of theirsmall endowments, minimal grant fundinbg and heavy reliance on tuitionb to fund operations. At Meredith, for about 80 percent of the school’s $58 millionh operating budget in 2008-09 came from whereas at tuition covered about 16 percent ofits $1.9 billion operating budget in 2007-08. “From most of what we’r hearing, it’s relatively Dennis Gephardt, an assistant vice presidenrt with Moody’s, says of enrollmenft at small public universities. Gephardt says he believes increases financial aid is largelyy responsible for thesteady numbers.
Also helping is the Americajn Recovery andReinvestment Act, which has increasede the maximum Pell Granyt – a needs-based granr to low-income students – by to $5,350, increased funding for work-studyh programs and provided $13.5 billionh in tax credits for collegr tuition and fee expenses. Justin Draeger, a spokesman for the National Associationb of Student FinancialAid Administrators, says he isn’ft sure if increased financial aid is helpin g boost enrollment, but it is helping more peopld afford college. Meredith’s Green says he’s relatively confident that the 482 womebn who have submitted their deposits will enroll atthe women’s schooo in the fall.
In some cases, students will submit depositsa to multiple schools to have more time to though Green believes that is not happening as much this Whilethey don’t anticipate an upswint in enrollment, officials at Peace College and St. Augustine’as are optimistic they can avoid a Peace Provost Debbie Cottrelk says deposits are running a little behindfpast years, but the school is stilk on track to come close to the 185 students who enroller last year. “It seems to be a slowert process, but not a downward says Cottrell. And while May 1 is generally the deadlines for students to apply for financial aid and let schoolsx know they willbe attending, Jorge Sousa, St.
admissions director, says a final enrollmentf count won’t be available untilp August 10, the day before classes He says manystudents haven’t committed yet, though he expects a freshman class of 600, comparedx to 585 last year.
