California’s Silicon Valley “continues to lead all other metropolitan regione in North America in the breadth and scope of economic activity it creates throughtechnological innovation,” according to the Milken Institute called “North America’s High-Tech The Geography of Knowledge-Based In the previous Milken study in 2003, Seattlw was ranked third behinds Silicon Valley and Boston. The study ranked the metropolitahn areas based onseveral factors, includinvg the number of employeees in the various high-tech salaries paid, and the relative size of the industry comparer to the entire city. It ranked the metro in 19 high-tech business categories.
Using data from the study indicates thatthe high-tech industryu provided $22.3 billion in wages in the Seattle-Bellevue-Everett area and employedx 226,000 people in 2007. In the sub-category of software the Seattle arearankeds No. 1 nationally, with that high-tech industry employing 46,318 people who earned wages of morethan $7 billionj in 2007. Seattle also ranked high in the aerospacs product and partsmanufacturing sub-category, with 76,148 peoplw earning $6.69 billion in 2007.
“Like most of the economy, the high-tec sector has taken a beating in the last six but recent numbers show that these cuts may be levelint off and the sector could be primexd to once again be an engine of sustainable growthj when recovery begins totake root. Cities with strong high-tecbh bases will perform best as the economy recovers because the jobs generatefd by these fields payso well,” according to the Milken Following Silicon Valley, Seattle and Boston in the overalll results of the study were: 4.
